When Should You Get an Oil Change?

While every vehicle is different, the rule of thumb for how often you should get your oil changed is between every 5,000–7,500 miles traveled or every six months—whichever comes first. For your vehicle’s exact oil change timeline, take a look at the maintenance schedule located in your owner’s manual.

Once you’ve driven roughly 5,000–7,500 miles or six additional months since your last oil change, it’s a good idea to check the oil levels in your engine to figure out how low you are. Follow these simple steps for checking your vehicle’s engine oil at home:  

• Shut off the engine and let it cool down.
• Pop the hood and remove the oil dipstick (it should be labeled and/or a bright color).
• Wipe the oil on the dipstick off using a fresh paper towel.
• Put the dipstick back into the oil, then remove and wipe on paper towel once more.

After you’ve completed this process, you’ll have a better understanding of where your engine oil levels are (either too high or too low). After wiping off the oil onto the paper towel, take a look at the color of the oil. If it looks rather dark in color, you might need an oil change ASAP.
